Actually, the spammers are getting smarter. I've read that phpBB Captcha's have been cracked recently by using OCR techniques. If you make the Captcha image sufficiently complex, possibly with multiple character patterns in it so that the user has to pick the correct one, that seems to stop them (for the moment).
