Re: Stopping automatic (spam) submissions of rings and sites

Hi all, in the past I haven't been able to post messages to RL-Open because of an email glitch but maybe it's time to try again.

So how are we all? Long time no hear! Here's a few of my thoughts on the recent thread.

CAPCHAs

Count me as another who hates CAPTCHAs - I often spend more time
figuring out the characters than what it took to fill out the form!

If the characters are fairly easy to decipher then I don't mind as much,
but it's not often they're easy to read.

So if Gunnar reckons cookies are 100% safe and easier to use then that
gets my vote.

CONFIRM PAGE

Having an extra confirm page means having another step in the process and I'm a KISS believer. Yeah, it'll have the same effect but if cookies are used it won't be needed anyway. But then I've never used external forms so my opinion about that probably doesn't mean a lot.

AUTOMATIC ABANDONED RING DELETION

As for rings having 0 sites being automatically deleted after a pre-determined amount of time - I LOVE the idea! Yes please Gunnar!

A couple of months ago I spent a whole weekend cleaning my ring system http://alt-webring.com/ of abandoned rings. I had 500+ rings on my system and about 300 were abandoned with 0 sites. It was a painful time-consuming exercise!

Or, in lieu of automatic deletion, how about a new page for the system admin that lists the following:

- all the rings on a system,
- the date each ring was created,
- the number of member sites, and
- links for each ring to view, delete and send email to a RM.
