Thanks for your comments. To me, it looks like an optional CAPTCHA is
the way things are going.
At the same time, there seems to be no emergency; nobody else reported
automated ring submissions, and, as Pete pointed out, they are basically
pointless (but still annoying for the system admin. who is supposed to
remove them).
