That feature is there in order to let a _ringmaster_ take backups of
his/her own ring, as an extra precaution measure. For instance, it's
possible if desired to take such a backup and restore it on some other
Ringlink system.
now I see *all rings* can be backed up and restored
through the main admin in one .tar.gz or .tar.Z. or .zip --I presume the
format a person chooses doesn't make any real difference.
Right. But on some servers you can't choose, since the necessary
software for either (or in worst case all) formats is missing.
