Passing ring code
A few weeks ago I gave a 'half' promise to add a link or button for
sending the ring code to a member via email. I have now given it further
consideration, and I'm still not convinced that it's the right way to go.
The primary reason for my hesitation is that I consider the web to be the most natural and safest way to pass the customized ring code. For instance, we know that some email clients/services screws up HTML code. Another reason, which was pointed out by Pete, is that I really think that every ringmaster should require that the registered site info is up to date. Consequently they should provide a link to "Site admin" on the ring homepage, accompanied with possible additional guidance where to find the site ID, and encourage their members to log in when needed. I want the Ringlink design to keep encouraging good ring management practice. :) Okay, okay, I know that even if it's obvious from the info on the ring homepage, from time to time a ringmaster will still need to prompt members to reinsert the code after a site redesign, etc... It was Jeff, Pam and Daniel who explicitly asked for the email feature. If I understood it correctly, the reason why you don't find the "Get code" form convenient enough is the need to explain how to log in. Basically there is no reason to password protect the access to the customized HTML code. I remember that the old WebRing system had a way to access the code which only required the site ID. I'm inclined to think that it would be better to do the same thing, i.e. add a method to access the customized ring code on the web without logging in. Of course, it would still require that they enter their site ID... I'd appreciate your comments on this alternative way to make it easier to pass the HTML code to the ring members. / Gunnar
